Club History

Serving the Upton St Leonards Community Since 1898

Founded by the Birchall family in memory of John Dearman Birchall, the Birchall Memorial Institute has been at the heart of Upton St Leonards village life for over 125 years. Originally created to bring people together for social, educational, and moral improvement, the Institute offered a reading room, assembly space, and recreational activities — from billiards to rifle clubs.

Through world wars, social change, and generations of members, the BMI Club has remained a symbol of local pride, run by a democratically elected committee and supported by its community. The founding values of friendship, moderation, and mutual support continue to shape the club today.
